Students of the West African Centre for Water, Irrigation and Sustainable Agriculture (WACWISA) pursuing Masters and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) under the Climate Resilience of Ecosystems Services (CRES) Project funded by Danida Fellowship Centre have undergone a technical training to enable them utilize drones in their field data collection. The training was undertaken in partnership with the Aarhus University (AU), led by Peter Dr. Borgen Sørensen (Senior Researcher) as the training instructor with support from Dr. Bernard N. Baatuuwie (Senior lecturer) of WACWISA-UDS.
The students were taken through drone assemblage, preflight checks, flying in manual mode, flying planned flight missions, downloading and processing data, introduction to concepts of image processing and computer vision. The Project Coordinator at WACWISA-UDS, Dr. Dzigbodi Adzo Doke expressed delight and satisfaction that the training will lead to the development of a new drone-based method for sampling tree production data such as flower and fruit counting. The objectives set for the training included learning and undertaking flight missions and planning in drone link, flying the DJI Mini2 drone with both manual and programmed missions and also understand the concepts of image processing and computer vision
