23 Masters and PhD Students from 7 African Countries Supported by WACWISA Graduate

Graced by the Acting Director General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Prof Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor; and the Deputy High Commissioner of Rwanda to Ghana, His Excellency Mr. Rurangwa Theophile, the North East Regional Minister Mr. Yidana Zakaria and the Northern Regional Minister Mr. Shani Alhassan Saibu, the West African Centre for Water Irrigation and Sustainable Agriculture (WACWISA), graduated twenty-three (23) post-graduate students at the 24th graduation ceremony of the University for Development Studies (UDS), held on 18th November, 2023 at the University, Tamale.

 

The WACWISA scholars who graduated included two (2) PhD and twenty-one (21) Masters graduates from seven (7) African countries, including Benin, DR Congo, Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria Rwanda, and Uganda. The Centre leader, Prof. Felix K. Abagale interacting with the graduands after the ceremony revealed his excitement by indicating that the Centre is proud working with the students from these different countries and supporting human capacity development. He encouraged students not to relent on their effort in innovation and research aimed at supporting and contributing to addressing challenges associated with agriculture, climate change, food security and development in Africa. Whilst thanking the staff of WACWISA as well as the various University stakeholders for the continued support, he also indicated his appreciation to funding agencies, partners and collaborators to the Centre; Government of Ghana, World Bank, Association of African Universities, Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UNIDO, EU, GIZ, IRD/AFD, JICA, etc. He asked for strengthening of the collaborations and more support for research and capacity building.

With funding support from the World Bank and Government of Ghana, WACWISA was established in 2019 by UDS as a semi-autonomous Centre of Excellence to undertake cutting-edge research and training in irrigation, drainage, water resources management, sustainable agriculture, climate change and food and nutrition security.  The Centre revolves a tagline of “Building Capacities for Sustainable Solutions”. The Centre has since provided scholarships to more than 100 scholars for Masters and PhD studies as well as training of over 500 individuals in the form of short courses and it is facilitating access to modern laboratory and field research facilities for the conduct of cutting-edge research in its thematic areas.
