Sustainable Water Management Network (RES-EAU/NET-WATER)
PhD Position at WACWISA
With support from the Agence Française de Développement (French Development Agency), Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (French National Research Institute – Sustainable Development) and Association of African Universities (AAU) and RES-EAU/NET-WATER, the West African Center for Water, Irrigation and Sustainable Agriculture (WACWISA) of the University for Development Studies (UDS), Tamale, Ghana has available a PhD position in Irrigation and Drainage Engineering with research focus on: “Smart Irrigation Systems Modelling and Simulation for Improved Water Use Efficiency”.
This position will be administered under the RES-EAU/NET-WATER jointly with its other African Centres of Excellence Impact (ACE Impact) partners, including International Institute for Water and Environment Engineering (CEA-2iE), Burkina Faso; African Center of Excellence for Water and Sanitation (C2EA), Benin; Regional Water and Environmental Sanitation Center Kumasi (RWESCK), Ghana; and the African Center of Excellence on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Agriculture (CEA-CCBAD), Côte d’Ivoire.
RES-EAU/NET-WATER promotes academic and scientific collaboration among African Centres of Excellence working in water and was formed as a network on sustainable water management involving five (5) partners, thus WACWISA-Ghana; CEA-2iE – Burkina Faso; C2EA – Benin; RWESCK – Ghana; and CEA-CCBAD – Côte d’Ivoire.
NET-WATER is supported by Agence Française de Développement (French Development Agency), Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (French National Research Institute – Sustainable Development) and Association of African Universities (AAU) as part of the four (4) thematic networks funded for a 4-year period (2020 – 2024)
Applicants must have a Research-based Masters Degree or equivalent in Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Soil and Water Conservation and Management, Horticulture, Agronomy, Hydrology and Watershed Management and Engineering, Agricultural Technology, Soil Science or related field. Practical field training/experience in Irrigation and Drainage Engineering is an added advantage. Applicants must be less than 40 years of age and nationals of and resident in Africa. Applicants must submit the following;
• Five (5)-page maximum research proposal on the research topic which shall contain a research topic, background, problem statement and justification, objectives, materials and methods and expected results.
• Two (2)-page statement of motivation outlining their fitness for the study programme and benefit of the training to their career progression, home country and Africa in general.
• Must submit two (2) academic letters of reference and one (1) professional letter of reference.
• Detailed curriculum vitae (CV) – maximum two (2) pages.
• Copy of Identity Card (ID) or Bio-data page of National Passport
All shortlisted applicants shall be interviewed.
Note: Female candidates in the West-Africa sub-region are particularly encouraged to apply.
The programme will mainly be in English but the ability to speak and write in French will be an added advantage, especially when administered jointly with a RES-EAU/NET-WATER French partner.
Duration and Details of the Scholarship Package
The scholarship is for a period of up to a maximum of four (4) academic years subject to yearly assessment for renewal based on satisfactory performance. It is tenable at the WACWISA/School of Engineering, University for Development Studies, and one other partner Centre of Excellence as listed above and shall cover the following:
• Tuition, Research and Learning Costs,
• Monthly Stipend
• Research Costs
• International Placement/Mobility Costs
